My thoughts exactly. Nobody really knows. It's funny how many Christians act like they know the answer to everything when in the same book it is suggested that our planet is flat.

A couple years ago I would have never said that but now I hate religion with a passion.

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: - Isaiah 40:22

I see at least two obvious facts here.

1. The world is round.
2. The universe is expanding ("stretching" of the Heavens is described at least ten times in Scripture).

To make a long opinion very short... People who accept theories like Darwinism and the big bang always end up with the same questions they had when they veered away from faith in a Supreme Being to a belief in undirected processes and mutations... What is life? What is consciousness? What is matter? Metaphysical questions such as these demand metaphysical answers. As an engineer, I cannot accept theories that acknowledge designs without a Designer and laws without a Lawmaker.

I had a very harsh introduction to religion spending 12 years in the United Pentecostal cult. If you want people that know the answer to everything, seek them out. They're based on legalism and reject any church outside their own.

I don't really affiliate myself with a certain religion anymore. It's basically a collection of groups that each interpret a certain text in a different way. I've found a few preachers who teach it as-is (Zorro's provided me with some good sermons), but I won't attend church regularly again until I can find that myself.

I won't argue against BC's point that quite a few (not all) Christians frequently try to compensate for unknowns and thus make themselves look silly. Living in the Bible Belt gives you plenty of opportunities to see this in action.

I've heard Christians that think men have one less rib then women do. This is obviously not true, and is a poor and even laughable attempt to support the Bible's description of how God took a rib from Adam and used it to create Eve (Genesis 2:21). This actually hides a potentially even greater truth - when the periosteum around the rib remains intact, the rib has the potential to regenerate after it's removed. Based on my reading, the ribs are the only bones in the human body capable of effectively doing this.

I also remember the story that an oil rig in Siberia drilled 9 miles into the earth and reached hell. The rig operators supposedly stuck a microphone down there and could hear the screams of millions of people in torment. When you examine the facts, the entire story is laughable with no factual backup whatsoever.

These are just a few examples of where Christians have sadly become so eager to prove their faith that they abandon caution, reason, and common sense in the process. As stated, it makes them look silly and even foolish. The Bible alone is sufficient for my faith. When scientific evidence comes along that supports what the Bible says, I'll accept it with caution.

I don't think there will be any scientific evidence proving that a snake has the ability to talk or that velociraptors were alongside kangaroos eating grass together. Countless times I remember my Sunday school teachers telling me that the earth is 6,000 years old or 10,000 at most and I believed it! Now I laugh at the idea as well as everything else that was indoctrinated into me that is not logical or scientific. The amount of fallacies committed by the church is just sickening.

The Bible was clearly written by men with no divine intervention. I always get a kick out of 1 Timothy 2:12:

I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.

This passage is actually on my fridge.

Round also does not imply a spherical shape. In my world history before 1500 class, we saw many maps from the Roman Empire that were round (centered around the Mediterrean Sea). They thought the world was in the shape of a circle but flat, just throwing that out there.
