Very bad things. They can be very, very dangerous. Think of them like a flying lawn motor without a guard or kick plate. A guy was actually killed last year from one. Below is a link to an article about it.

Anywho. I finally got my fleet up and running again. Well, kinda... I do have one micro in the infirmary at the moment due to part failure. But oh well. Here's a pic of my current fleet minus one. I have a few others that are shelved permanently because they're crap.

I remember when that story broke. I've seen that guy's YouTube videos... and also the injuries he sustained from the accident.

That little quadrocopter is sweet! What's it called? Also, I'm having trouble scaling your biggest heli. How big is it and how long can it fly per charge? What's the range like? Those things are so cool.

The blade span on the big one is about 39 inches and the length from the front of the canopy to the end of the tail boom is about 34 inches. The flight time depends on the pilot's flying style, the size/mah (milliamp) of the battery being used, and the age of the pack. Depending on whether or not I'm flying extreme 3D, sport flying, or just practicing orientation, my flight time will vary from 3 to 5 minutes per pack. Again, there's a lot of factors in it. The batteries cost between $40 and $100 each depending on brand.

Opps. Forgot to mention the range. The range varies by what receivers/satellites are being used on the helis. On the big one it's over a mile.

The quad copter is a cheap little Nano QX - it's very easy to fly. Pause is contemplation on getting one per my advice.

A mile+? Dang!! I didn't know some RC helis used GPS.

I spent my eBay bucks certificate on a 3ch mini Chinook from Syma for my dad's birthday. He isn't getting the hang of utilizing 4ch helicopters to their fullest potential so 3ch would be no different to him as that's all he utilizes anyway.

The Nano QX is an awesome little bird for first timers and I would highly recommend it. My bro tried it for the first time the other day without any issues at all. Granted, he didn't try it in stunt mode (I have the stunt rates programmed to 150% and the stunt expo programmed to -5%), and he is already a R/C plane pilot, but he was surprised how stable it was in the stabilization mode. He was plastering it on the ceiling and making it "bounce" off the floor without any difficulty. The little quad copters with high quality stabilization systems (like SAFE) are probably the easiest and most docile of all helis to fly. I've yet to break anything on my Nano QX and I've crashed it pretty hard; I've even dropped it out of the sky at 40 ft into the grass to show someone how hard it is to break. And as a bonus, the Nano QX does do flips if you have the rates up high enough (it can't fly inverted, though).

A good quad or a good co-axial are the places to start for beginners. I personally would recommend you avoid the cheap stuff because you'll get what you pay for. The Nano QX isn't very expensive (only about $80-$90 for the RTF version), and trust me it's worth every penny if you're a beginner. The RTF (Ready To Fly) version comes with a cute little transmitter which is fine for beginners. I bought the BNF (Bind 'N Fly) version because I use my DX8 transmitter to fly mine; primarily so I can program the rates, expo, stunt mode switch, timer, etc.

I'm hoping Pause will get one so he can back me up on how easy it is to fly for a beginner and how durable it is.

:D

How do some RC helis fly inverted? I've seen it happen but I don't understand what goes on with the rotors.

That's what "collective pitch" means. The swashplate on a collective pitch heli not only banks to adjust the blade pitch at a specific area of the 360 degree rotation, but will also push/pull the entire swashplate up and down the main shaft, which reverses the pitch of the blades. Below is a video I quickly found on YouTube of some guy setting his pitch range on a Robird FBL unit; it'll show the collective pitch movement. I've linked to about 55 seconds into the video to save you time.
