Zorro's R/C Flying Videos

Postby Zorro » August 11th, 2014, 9:50 am

This will be my thread where I post my flying videos of my helis and planes. Currently, most of my videos as unlisted, so I'm not sure if my channel's subscribers get notified when I upload a heli video. With that in mind, here's one of my more recent videos of me flying one of my helis.

Here's a video someone took at the field the other day of me flying my 600. The video is not complete. Excuse the quality (Facebook's fault). Best played with HD enabled.

It's hard to understand that sport. So much movement that it's hard to make heads or tails (HAHAHA PUN INTENDED) of the moves.

So are you saying that you don't understand the sport of snowboarding, particularly on a half pipe or freestyle course? The casual spectator wouldn't know a 540 from a 720 or 1080 unless the sport commentator said something. With Olympic figure skating, you wouldn't be able to identify the difference between a lutz and salchow without help from 'ol Scott. It's the same thing here. The untrained eye (i.e. casual spectators) can appreciate the flying just like they would snowboarding or figure skating. The trained eye can appreciate critiquing the flight routine.

The heli doesn't float or fly on its own. You're seeing me manipulate the tail disc (10500RPM in that video) and main rotor disc (2300RPM in that video) to rapidly deflect the thrust in precise directions. Every time the heli changes its direction in any way, my orientation to it changes as well. For example, using left aileron will only bank the heli to *my* left if the heli is facing upright and away from me (tail in); on the same token, if I want the heli to bank to *my* left when it's nose in, I have to use right aileron. When the heli is inverted, the control directions all reverse again. If I lose orientation, gravity wins. If I accidentally bump the wrong control, gravity wins.

The only R/C aircraft that are easy to fly are the cute co-axials and those stupid multi-rotors (i.e. drones) that are ruining the hobby because of the dumbasses flying them over airports and into the White House lawn.

Cool video. That must take a ridiculous amount of practice. Do you still crash every now and then though, Zorro? By the way, I marvel at your English composition.

Yeppers! But thankfully my latest crash wasn't a result of pilot error! Happened yesterday... A thrown blade can go right through a wall, vehicle door, or windshield. So it's very interesting that the blades were thrown when the heli was perfectly parallel to the runway and when the disc was in a perfect 90 degree angle to the ground. This eliminated any risk whatsoever of a thrown blade hitting someone. Think what you will, but I say it was the good Lord watching out for us.

8-)

This is a video of me doing a 3D demo of my 600X at an indoor fun fly inside a hangar. Indoor fun flies are mostly attended by experienced pilots flying little 3D foam airplanes (called "foamies") or mini multi-rotors (i.e. mini drones). Because it's so dangerous, I had to get special permission from the event coordinator to do this flight. This video was taken just 4 days prior to the spindle bolt breaking (see video above). That would have SUCKED if the blades were thrown indoors, because there were 40 pilots present alongside a bunch of spectators! It's one thing to lose orientation because I can cut the throttle and bury it into the concrete before it hits someone; but a thrown blade is like a missile that will go right through a building. When I'm flying indoors, from now on I'm going to have all the spectators moved to a specific location of the venue. Safety first!

From now on when you post these videos, I'm going to caution you until you get a bullet-proof vest or turn into a vampire. Those blades are dangerous!

Sweet moves, though. When you're playing basketball, the depth perception can drastically throw you off when switching between big/small arenas. Is it similar for switching from indoor/outdoor for the heli?

Great videos. Look at all of those people recording! Zorro, you're becoming quite famous with your RC helicopter prowess. It's good to see that you stay a reasonable distance from your helicopter as well as others being blocked off from its vicinity. We all know what happened to that guy from Brooklyn a few years back who had a habit of flying his craft too close to himself. :o Safety first. I love it.

Are you going to contact Blade and report the defective bolt?
